Floodborn is a CharacterClassification. Floodborn Characters are Glimmers either Storyborn or Dreamborn that came in contact with The Flood and were transformed.[1] While being Floodborn can transform a character in unpredictable ways, it can also enhance one of their particular qualities or talents.[2]
Floodborn is the only Classification with an altered card design, the banner showing the classifications is a black ink splat, instead of having a similar color to the Ink. This is not the case if the card is enchanted. This doesn't affect gameplay in any way. Currently, all Floodborn characters have the ShiftKeyword in their Ability trait that no other keyword shares.
Created from the magic of Lorcana,[3] Floodborn Glimmers are Storyborn or Dreamborn Glimmers that were transformed by the cascade of inks from the Flood and transformed in unpredictable ways.[1] These Glimmers diverge from their source material, where the ink has amplified a particular trait or talent they had as a Storyborn or Dreamborn.[2][4] Floodborn Glimmers are the only Glimmer who can be created from a pre-existing Storyborn or a Dreamborn, but are not one an Illumineer can create, although they can be re-inkcast later.
Floodborn Glimmers can have unpredictable changes to the character[2]; however, as opposed to Dreamborn, who alter something about a Glimmer, Floodborn Glimmers amplify a quality or aspect that has been in the character all along.[5][2] Due to this, a newly shifted Floodborn does not necessarily differ from the original character in design; there may be a drastic change or there may be little change in appearance, with one example present in the unaltered design of the Floodborn Mickey Mouse - Playful Sorcerer.[5]
While the first Floodborn emerged among the Glimmers present inside The Great Illuminary, more were created from Glimmers in the Inklands, who were indirectly transformed as a result of the Flood's runoff pouring into Lorcana itself.[6] Due to the large amount of ink they were exposed to, Floodborns can have their original ink type changed from what it was previously.[7]
