Archazia's Island Lore Card Back.png

A Lore Card is a unique non-playable Card type that serve a narrative mechanic for the set.[1] Introduced in Archazia's Island, Lore Cards expand the storyline of the game with insight on events happening within the set, cards, and flavor text through a linear narrative. The story of the set is presented in the card series, where the cards representing a page of the story as individual excerpts enumerated to progress the story in chronological order.[2]

Each set's Lore Cards come with a small illustration on the bottom of each card that can be used as a flip-book animation. Like previous sets, Lore Cards can also combine to reveal puzzle illustrations on the back, and each set has two different illustrations formed from nine of the cards.[1]

List of Lore Cards

Archazia's Island

Card 1

I'VE WAITED HERE AGES NOW, and I'd be alone if not for the company of my ink friends.
The others have finally arrived from across the sea, seeking knowledge. Seeking my help.
They're worried. But they're not worried nearly enough...

Card 2

"It's you! The Owl of the Azurite Sea! We've been looking for you for so long," Shanzay said.
The ancient Illumineer adjusted her owl mask and swept a wing outward, welcoming the newcomer and her friends. The magical mask looked wary at first but then smiled.
"At last! I feared you'd never come. Welcome to my little island."

Card 3

The classroom was unlike any Shanzay had ever seen. In place of chalkboards, wispy magical trails the Owl called "thought scrolls" drifted through the air.
"Will we learn how to make those?" she asked.
"Thoughts?" The Owl shrugged. "No, dear–you either have them or you don't."

Card 4

It seemed like days–time passed like a dream on the island as the Owl taught them inkcasting skills beyond anything they'd ever attempted.
"That's it... now Steel, but don't neglect the Amethyst. It tends to run away on you. Steady... Don't forget to hold it in your imagination. And–"
Shanzay interrupted, pointing high in the sky. "I did it! Look. The lion, but he's Amethyst and Steel."
The Owl beamed with pride. "Hard work pays off, my child!"

Card 5

"The way you've been inkcasting glimmers isn't wrong, exactly. You're just not utilizing the full potential of your inkcaster and, more importantly, your imagination," the Owl said. "Martin, is it? Just focus on both inks at once and..."
But Martin was focused on something else.

Card 6

"Stop fiddling and pay attention, young man!" tutted the Owl.
Martin had been casually strumming his inkcaster, its magical strings humming with a playful tune. "I am! This is how I focus my thoughts while I... ah! There he is!"
An Amber and Emerald glimmer of a mischievous dog bounded over and gave the Owl a sloppy kiss.

Card 7

"Very good!" The Owl flapped excitedly. "Soon we'll be seeing a flood of dual–ink glimmers out of you."
Martin winced, the events of the flood still heavy on his mind.
"Ah, yes. I'm sorry. Poor choice of words." The Owl paused. "Let's just say your talent may soon eclipse mine." She cocked her head. "And I've been around a while!"

Card 8

"How does it work, exactly?" asked Venturo, tapping one of the magical coils wrapped around his arm next to his inkcaster.
"The Hexwell allows me to create powerful items like the coils. They–"
"I'm sorry," Venturo interrupted the Owl. "The Hexwell?"
"It's the reason this island exists." The Owl's voice dropped to a whisper. "A forge with such magical power must be safeguarded at all costs."

Card 9

"Safeguarded?" Venturo frowned. "I feel like there's a teensy bit of history behind that word."
"My dear, you have the gift of understatement," the Owl said. "Once upon a time, using the Hexwell, I made a crown of immense power. And soon after... it was stolen."
"Bummer."
"A gift you have indeed."

Card 10

"Eventually, the Hexwell Crown was recovered and the thief imprisoned." The Owl pointed at a floating thought scroll that displayed shadowy images of a broken crown. "And after it was sundered in the recent struggle with the sea witch, half of it was hidden in the Great Illuminary, locked away safe."
"And the other half?" Venturo asked.
"Is even safer," the Owl replied with a wink.

Card 11

Shanzay set her inkcaster aside and began to doodle in the margins of her lorebook. "Why do you wear that mask, anyway?"
There was a long pause before the Owl replied.
"I suppose I'm just wary. If the identity of the true guardian of Hexwell Island became known, it might attract unwelcome guests."
"Like the sea witch? But we defeated her. The crown was broken."
The Owl sighed. "Broken can be fixed, child."

Card 12

"Who would recognize you?" Shanzay asked. "During our voyage we heard stories of the legendary Owl of the Azurite Sea, but no stories about...I'm sorry, what's your name, again?"
The Owl knew it was an attempt to draw out information. Secrecy was crucial. But this girl and her friends seemed different.
"Archazia." There was a long pause. "It's been so long since I've heard my own name."
Shanzay set her lorebook aside and extended her hand. "Pleased to meet you, Archazia."

Card 13

"It's nice to have a friend again, especially a fellow Illumineer," said Archazia. Then she added, so low that Shanzay could barely hear, "Maybe this time it will go better."
"What do you mean?" Shanzay asked.
"Nothing." Archazia stood up abruptly. "It was a long time ago. Come. Let's resume our lesson."

Card 14

Using his coil, Martin was magically floating up near the top of a bookshelf in the library, mumbling something Archazia couldn't quite hear into his cupped hand.
"Come down from there, young man, and speak properly!"
Startled, he quickly stuffed something into his pocket and pointed with his other hand at a line on a thought scroll drifting nearby.
"I don't understand this. What language is it?"
"You're upside down," Archazia observed. "Perhaps try reading it right side up?"

Card 15

Martin floated down from the bookshelf, sheepish. "So... question. What would happen if half the Hexwell Crown were to, um, disappear? You know, from the Illuminary."
Archazia's eyes narrowed. "Why do you ask?"
"I'm saying…I just found out that the sphere holding the Hexwell Crown is, well, empty."
"Just found out? But how did you–?"
Martin held up a round communicator device he pulled from his pocket.
Archazia laughed. "I see there's more to you than meets the eye, my child."

Card 16

"So." Archazia straightened to her full, formidable height. "Half the broken crown is now missing, The other half was recently discovered safely–but only just. That makes it all the more important that you and your glimmers focus on training. Learn. Practice. Prepare. Are you ready?"
Martin jumped to his feet. "Ready!" He was about to start inkcasting again when he noticed the glimmer of the scrappy dog he'd inkcast earlier delicately slurp up a spaghetti noodle. "Uh, ready...right after dinner!"

Card 17

"I'll have my glimmers fan out on the island. Sirely there's a story star or two out there that might help us prepare," Venturo said.
Archazia nodded. "That's wise. But be careful. I've been building up the island's defenses for ages."
You mean all those obstacles?"
"Yes," Archazia said with a growing smile.
"But maybe we can use them to your advantage."

Card 18

Venturo grinned. "I see where you're going with this. Those obstacles can serve as a training ground."
"Precisely," Archazia said. "And while your glimmers practice their skills and find those story stars, there's plenty here for you to learn. The coils I gave you–they can increase your inkcasting power if you study their secrets."
"Cool." Venturo tapped the inkcaster on his wrist and motioned his friends over. "Okay, people! We've got some story starts to find. Who's with me?"

Card 19

The Illumineers watched as their glimmers set out to search for story stars on the island. "What a wonderful home you have, Archazia," said Venturo. "We finally have what we want–someone to teach us. With your help, we'll get that crown back and figure out how to repair the Illuminary."
"I hope your optimism in me is not misplaced." Archazia looked at the three of them and finally nodded, as if making a decision. "Right. Let's get to it."

Reign of Jafar

Card 1

BE IT KNOWN
HIGH SULTAN JAFAR, LORD OF LORCANA, HEREBY PROCLAIMS HIS BENEVOLENT RULE FROM HIS SEAT OF POWER ON HEXWELL ISLAND! ALL ARE SUMMONED TO HIS MAGNIFICENT PALACE TO WITNESS HIS CORONATION. COME! BOW BEFORE HIM AND PAY TRIBUTE!

Card 2

"Have you looked outside?" Martin said, peering out the window of Archazia's library. Venturo and Shanzay joined him and gasped. "Is that a wave... of sand?" Martin pointed to something sweeping across the tranquil forests of Hexwell Island. As it passed, trees twisted and cracked, and the landscape transformed. "Get Archazia. Hurry!" Shanzay told Martin, unable to take her eyes off the magical wave of sand. He dashed off.

Card 3

While waiting for Martin to return with Archazia, Shanzay and Venturo watched as the island was overtaken by forceful magic and remade into something dry and barren with marble–and–gold buildings of garish opulence.
"This is so wrong," said Shanzay.
Moments later, Martin returned, breathless and clutching Archazia's inkcaster. "She's... she's..." He leaned over the magical staff, panting and scrubbing sand from his eyes. "She's gone."

Card 4

BE IT KNOWN
HIGH SULTAN JAFAR, LORD OF LORCANA, HEREBY PROCLAIMS THAT THE ILLUMINEER WHO CALLS HERSELF "THE OWL" HAS COME TO THE ROYAL PALACE OF HER OWN VOLITION FOR HER PERSONAL PROTECTION. SHE IS NOW ASSISTING HIGH SULTAN JAFAR WITH MATTERS OF GREAT CONSEQUENCE. THIS CRUCIAL WORK IS NOT TO BE DISTURBED!

Card 5

"There are fliers and goons everywhere outside. Jafar says Archazia's working with him, but I doubt it," said Martin.
"You think?" Shanzay looked around, then grabbed a thought scroll. "She must have something that could help us find her."
After an hour or two of desperate searching, Venturo whispered excitedly, "I found schematics of the palace! Look!"
Shanzay looked it over. "Oh yeah, this'll work."

Card 6

As they pored over the schematics, slowly a plan came together. They'd dodge the Jafar glimmer's guards between the library and palace, then sneak in through a tunnel system underneath the building. From there, they could enter the Armory through a hidden hatch and make a break to rescue Archazia from her former workshop.
As they were leaving, Venturo turned to Martin. "Bring Archazia's inkcaster. She might need it."

Card 7

"Are we sure the tunnels in those schematics are safe?" Martin asked as they dashed to Jafar's palace, the sand wave not far behind them as it continued to sweep over the island.
"No choice!" Shanzay said. "Look–the entrance is just ahead."
"Complete with a palace guard." Venturo shaded his eyes. See the light patterns shifting?"
"I bet that's one of Jafar's illusions.
Shanzay blew out a breath. "Okay, so what now?"

Card 8

The guard spotted them and yelled. Martin stepped forward. "Lemme try something..." He strummed a few heroic notes on his inkcaster as the sand wave roared ever closer. With the final flourish, a Bolt glimmer took shape. The dog growled at the guard illusion and pierced him with an intense stare. To Venturo's surprise, the guard disappeared in a burst of misty light.
"Nice work!" Venturo shouted. Grinning, Martin tousled Bolt's white fur.

Card 9

"Guys, there are tiny footprints in the sand here leading away." Martin stopped short at the entrance to the tunnel. "If they're from the Basil glimmer, they might they lead us to Archazia."
"We don't know that," Shanzay said. "And we can't risk indulging your curiosity again after the Ursula disaster. Come on!"
Martin glowered but dove in after her just as the sand wave reached them.

Card 10

BE IT KNOWN
UNDER PAIN OF BANISHMENT FROM THE KINGDOM, ILLUMINEERS AND GLIMMERS ARE COMMANDED TO PRESENT TO HIGH SULTAN JAFAR ALL OF THE ILLUMINEER ARCHAZIA'S MAGICAL ITEMS OF POWER, TO BE KEPT SAFELY IN HIS PALACE.

Card 11

After what seemed like hours in the tunnels, the Illumineers found a room stuffed with treasures.
"Man, he's greedy," Venturo said.
"Maybe," Shanzay said. "Except he specified Archazia's inventions."
Venturo's eyes widened. "Hold on..." he said. "Jafar wants to be all–powerful, right? Who's more powerful than Illumineers in Lorcana? Especially Archazia?" He nodded at the Owl's inkcaster in Martin's hands. "I think I know what he's after."

Card 12

Martin didn't hear Venturo–he was staring at the floor. "Look! More tiny tracks! Leading into the maze."
"No," said Shanzay. "Archazia's workshop is the other way."
Martin turned to her. "The Basil glimmer has been under Jafar's power for a while, and the whole Island is different now. Following Basil could be more reliable than depending on her schematics."
Nodding, Venturo said, "Martin has a point." Shanzay shrugged. "Fine."

Card 13

Thanks to Basil's footprints, the Illumineers navigated the maze quickly until they came upon the mouse glimmer himself standing in the path, looking confused.
"Basil!" Martin dropped down. "What are you doing?"
Basil wrung his tiny hands. "I took a spill and hit my head. The last thing I remember was seeing a rather large owl trapped in an hourglass."
Shanzay glanced guiltily at Martin and then answered, "Can you show us?"

Card 14

Basil led them to a nearby room and waved toward the door. "It's through there. I'm still rather unsteady, so I'd best wait here."
The Illumineers peered through the door.
A twenty–foot hourglass dominated the chamber, guarded by an enormous metal scorpion whose tail was half that height. Inside the lower half of the hourglass, surrounded by rising sand, they could make out the green–clad shape of a familiar owl.
"Archazia!" Shanzay gasped.

Card 15

"We're gonna need backup," Martin said, eyeing the giant scorpion. He strummed his inkcaster.
A glimmer of Archimedes materialized. "I say, is that my fellow owl enthusiast, Archazia?" "Yes." Martin pointed with Archazia's inkcaster. "Distract that while we try to free her!"
The smaller owl hooted, then zipped around the scorpion. The colossus lumbered in chase, slipping wildly on the marble.

Card 16

The Archimedes glimmer dove, and the scorpion lunged. Its legs sprawled out and its tail crashed into the hourglass, shattering it. Archazia spilled onto the marble in a sandy flood, then rose and sauntered to the Illumineers.
"Excuse my absence, dears. It seems I've had too much time on my hands." She dusted her feathers and peered at the toppled scorpion. "Leave that for now. We need a plan to stop that Jafar glimmer."

Card 17

Once back in Archazia's library, Shanzay said, "I have an idea." The others gathered around her. "Step one," she began, glancing at Martin with an apologetic smile, "trust our friend's instincts. If we'd followed Basil to begin with, we'd be that much closer to getting out of this mess." "Thanks," he said, beaming at her. "And step two?"
She rubbed her hands together and said with a sly grin, "Trick that Jafar glimmer and retrieve the Hexwell Crown."

Card 18

Archazia wistfully watched their exchange, then closed her eyes. "I never should have let things fester with my friend long ago," she said in a low voice. Squaring her shoulders, she looked at Shanzay. "No matter. How can we trick him long enough to distract from our efforts?"
Venturo snapped his fingers. "I've got it! We think Jafar's after your inkcaster. He wants to have the power of Illumineers for himself." Their mentor chuckled. "Truly! Perhaps we should gift it to him as a peace offering, then. Come, I have a plan."

Card 19

Archazia held out her inkcaster to the Jasmine glimmer chosen to infiltrate Jafar's palace. "Remember, he thinks this bestows an Illumineer's powers. We know it doesn't, but you must pretend. Distract him while the rest of the team goes for the Hexwell Crown."
"What if he figures out it won't work for him?" Jasmine asked.
"Then you'll fight your way out with the Crown. Lorcana is counting on you–Jafar's reign must end."
