The Vine is a magical plant infused with an excess of inks that started growing around Lorcana.
History
Little is known about the Vine's origins, although it once dwelt inside the Inkwell Caverns. When the Flood washed over Lorcana, the Vine's roots absorbed the mixed ink, causing it to grow into a shoot that ruptured through the ground. Upon the shoot reaching the surface, several Glimmers investigated the growing roots surrounding the Illuminary. Among them, an Elsa Glimmer came in contact with the budding shoot. Sensing the danger that the Vine posed, Elsa tried to freeze the shoot, but her and the Vine's nascent ink magic instead summoned a powerful snow spell.
“There's only one way to stop this vine. Wait, no... It's full of mixed ink? There's too much! I can't control it!”
Due to Elsa's interference, the Vine was frozen throughout the Winterspell. When the storm was undone by Elsa herself, the Vine thawed out and continued its expansion to other areas of Lorcana to absorb more ink.[1] Having gained a hunger for ink, the Vine extended its tendrils across Lorcana to absorb not only the Flood's ink, but all of Lorcana's reservoirs.[2] When segments of the Vine entered new environments in Lorcana, its growth caused collateral damage in the process, while mutating as it moved through each. As the Vine gradually absorbed all the Flood Ink, the Vine started to adopt the characteristics of the Flood itself over time.[3]
She had a lot to learn about being a bear, but protecting her family came naturally.
“Environment appears habitable, but the flora seems to have undergone some strange mutations. Could be Zurg's influence.”
Eventually reaching massive size as it sucked up more ink, the Vine developed magical abilities of its own and channeled them into its own defenses.[4]
Abilities
The Vine can produce various flowers based on the six inks,[1][5][6] depending on the area it grows in. Each flower type has a nature and abilities corresponding to the ink it grew from:
- Amber flowers resemble star flowers with variants that have petals braided together in a weaving pattern. They can use their stamen to ensnare targets.
“Can you hurry up, Woody? I think these flowers are aiming to break the bank, if you know what I mean!”
- Amethyst flowers resemble violets and periwinkles with a grape-shaped bulb. They can emit a magical spiral to hypnotize their victims.
“Bind this glimmer, fiendish flowers!”
- Emerald flowers resemble porous gourds, green flowers with dangling string-like stamens, and pink daisy-like flowers with green tips. When closed, they release a magic pollen that pacifies their targets. There exists a Venus flytrap-like variant with a bulbous purple head.
“There's something wrong with these flowers, Da. They make me feel funny, like I dinnae want to fight them.”
She'll take on anything for the right price.
- Ruby flowers resemble lilies and hibiscus and feature a pointed stamen. They use their sharp stamens to stab their attackers or spit seed bullets from their bulb.
- Sapphire flowers resemble magnolias with glowing blue lines on their petals and curled stamens. Their abilities are unknown, but a fanged Venus flytrap-like variant exists.
“Another surccessful test! This brilliant devitalizer ray technology will be my finest invention yet!”
- Steel flowers resemble bell flowers with pollen stems that resemble gold bars. Their abilities are unknown.
After consuming the remaining Flood ink, the Vine gains the power to use Flood Ink and spawn sentient plants as protection against the Illumineers.[4][7] Its forces mostly consist of winged sapling-like creatures covered in thorns. However, the stronger variants, Vinelings, are physical clones of Glimmers, representing an advanced development of the Vine's power to summon Floodborn of its own.[8]
“What's making that awful noise? It sounds like it's coming our way.”
–Shanzay, an Illumineer
“Is that.... me? The vine made a copy of me to defend itself?”
