Banishing refers to the act of removing a card that was in play in the Cards in play area into the Discard pile.

After a Challenge, if a Character has accumulated equal or more Damage compared to the amount of Willpower that the Character or Location has, they will be Banished, where it will be placed in the Discard pile.

Banish mechanic rulings

  • If a location is banished then the effects of that location on characters expire.
  • Players can choose to banish their own cards even if they have the Ward Keyword, as this only limits the opponents to their actions upon this card.
  • If a player plays a card with a cost to activate the banish effects and they can't pay the cost, the card resolves without any effect.
    • Even though you can play a card that has no target which results in the card having no effect, target choosing is still mandatory. If there is a valid target for the card when it is played, that target must be chosen, even if the player would not want to select the card.
  • Any abilities that occur when they are banished during a "In a Challenge", trigger and resolve during that challenge, even if multiple abilities are triggered.
    • If a card is returned to hand after being banished, it is considered to have been to the discard pile first, so cards that have trigger effects when a card is "returned to the player's hand" will not trigger.
    • If a card is damaged as a result of a challenge causing it to be banished, but is not the target of a challenge, the card is not considered to have been in a challenge.
    • Passive abilities that occur as a result of a card being on the field immediately end as the character is banished and placed into the discard pile.
    • Cards which have effects that activate after banishing a character only activate once against a Shifted Floodborn character as the card stack is considered a single character until it moves to another field location (such as the Inkwell) at which point the stack will separate to its individual components. Likewise banished cards must always move to the discard pile first before being diverted to another location as a result of an ability.

Aladdin - Heroic Outlaw's DARING EXPLOIT Ability will be able to trigger when he challenges and banishes a character, even if he is banished at the same time.
When resolving the effect of Be Prepared, all Characters are banished at the same time and go to the Discard pile at the same time. Any effects that are triggered by characters entering the discard pile are added to a pool where the active player first chooses the order for all their abilities to trigger and resolve them, before the opponent gets to choose the order for all their ability to trigger and resolve them.
If you have a card which triggers an ability when you banish a Character in a challenge, it will only trigger once even if the banished character is a Shifted Floodborn Character.
  • For example, if you banish a shifted character with Simba - Rightful Heir, you still gain only 1 lore from his I KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO ability.
Even though you can play a card that has no target which results in the card having no effect, target choosing is still mandatory. If there is a valid target for the card when it is played, that target must be chosen.

Lady Tremaine - Imperious Queen's POWER TO RULE AT LEAST ability allows the opponent to choose which character is banished. This means that even if a character like Prince John - Greediest of All has Ward, he can still be chosen to be banished as it is the opponent choosing which character to banish.
If 2 or more characters were banished at the same time, you can trigger King Louie - Jungle VIP's LAY IT ON THE LINE ability the same amount of times as the amount of characters that were banished.
  • If your King Louie - Jungle VIP has 6 damage and you use King Louie to challenge an opponent's character with 2 strength, both characters involved in the challenge would receive damage and be banished at the same time. Therefore King Louie would not be able to trigger his ability, as he was already banished and no longer in play. This outcome is the same even if it was your King Louie being challenged instead.
Judy Hopps - Optimistic Officer's DON'T CALL ME CUTE ability states "When you play this character, you may banish chosen item. Its player draws a card." In order to choose the item, you must commit to banishing the item. If you do not commit to banishing the item, that means the item was never chosen, which in turn results in the player being unable to draw a card.
You may play The Most Diabolical Scheme even if you do not have a Villain character in play. However the first and required part of The Most Diabolical Scheme's ability requires you to banish a Villain character you control. If you have no Villain characters in play, you will not be able to banish an opposing character and The Most Diabolical Scheme will resolve without effect.

If you have other characters in play besides Lyle Tiberius Rourke - Cunning Mercenary and your opponent plays Be Prepared, all the characters are banished but the effects stating "other characters is banished" will still be noted and be able to trigger. After all the characters enter the discard pile, you will be able to resolve them.
