Challenges Rulings

Any ability that occur when they are Banished "In a Challenge", trigger and resolve during that challenge. [1]

Take note that only the Character that is challenging and the Character that is being challenged are considered to be "In a Challenge".

Even if there are multiple abilities triggering, they are still considered to be part of the challenge as effects resolve.[3]

  • If your Marshmallow - Persistent Guardian challenges Mufasa - Betrayed Leader and Mufasa reveals Maleficent - Monstrous Dragon, the opponent's Maleficent may choose to banish Marshmallow with her Dragon Fire ability. After that since the game state is considered to still be in the challenge, as there was no point where there weren't any effects resolving, Marshmallow will be considered to have been banished while in the challenge and you may choose to return it to hand.[3]

All abilities that occur "In a Challenge" have to be resolved before moving out of the Challenge. Abilities that state "Whenever... is banished in a challenge" or "whenever this character banishes another character in a challenge" are considered to still be resolving during a challenge. [4]

These "Whenever... is banished in a challenge" or "whenever this character banishes another character in a challenge" abilities are triggered only after the respective characters were banished and have entered the Discard pile.

  • If the active player Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy challenges and [banish]]es an opponent's Flounder - Voice of Reason, then uses her PUNY PIRATE! ability to deal 2 damage to the opponent's already damaged Dr. Facilier - Agent Provocateur which banishes him, Flounder is banished and put into the Discard pile before any effect triggers. Following that, the triggers for Dr. Facilier and Tinker Bell will both activate. The active player will first get to resolve Tinker Bell's ability to deal 2 damage to Dr. Facilier to banish him, but Dr. Facilier's ability will still get to trigger his ability to return Flounder to hand.[5]
  • If the active player Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy challenges and banishes the opponent's Aurora - Dreaming Guardian, Aurora is banished and put into the Discard pile before any effect triggers. As Aurora is no longer in play, her PROTECTIVE EMBRACE ability will no longer be active and the opponent's other Characters will no longer have Ward. As such, Tinker Bell may use her PUNY PIRATE! ability to deal 2 damage another opponent's character.[6]

If you have a card which triggers an ability when you banish a Character in a challenge, it will only trigger once even if the banished character is a Shifted Floodborn Character.[1]

  • For example, if you banish a shifted character with Simba - Rightful Heir, you still gain only 1 lore from his I KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO ability.

If for any reason the challenger or challenged character is removed from play (For example Banished), the challenge ends. The game skips to the end of the challenge step where all effects of "while challenging" end and play continues.
