Into the Inklands/Rulebook Changes

Major Changes

  • The rulebook now includes a section on Shift, explaining how it works. You can play a Floodborn character using the Shift ability if you have a character with the same name in play, by paying the Shift cost and then covering the old card with the new one. The shifted character uses their own rules text, but keeps any damage or effects that were a part of the original, including ready/exerted status and whether or not its ink is dried. When a shifted character leaves play, the entire stack goes to whatever zone the card is going to.
  • The first paragraph about how damage works has been removed.
  • There is a new section on moving damage counters, which is a new thing in Into the Inklands, as seen on cards such as Bestow a Gift, Maleficent - Mistress of All Evil, and Mama Odie - Voice of Wisdom. The rulebook here clarifies that such card effects do not count as dealing damage or damaging, and anything that would increase damage does not apply here.
  • There are now multiple pages explaining how location cards work.
    • Location abilities can provide benefits to the player, usually based on characters being at the location. These abilities can be used on the turn the location is played.
    • On your turn, you can move one of your characters to one of your locations by paying that location's move cost. A character can move even if its ink isn't dried, and even if the location was just played. A character can move regardless of its exerted/ready status. There is no limit to how many characters can be at a location. A character can move from one location to another, by paying the new location's move cost. But a character cannot move away from a location except to go to another location.
    • An opposing character can challenge a location the same way that they'd challenge an exerted character. The Challenger ability applies when challenging locations. When a location is challenged, it takes damage equal to the strength of the challenging character, but it does not deal any damage back. Locations can also take damage from actions and abilities, but only if they specify that a location can be chosen as the target. When a location has damage equal to or greater than its willpower, it is banished and sent to the discard pile. Any characters at that location are now no longer considered to be at a location, they're just on the table as they were before going to the location. However, nothing detrimental happens to the characters beyond that when a location is banished.
    • At the start of your turn, you gain lore equal to the lore value of each location you have in play. This does not count as questing.
    • The parts of a location card are its ink cost, its move cost, its willpower, its ability, and its lore value.
    • The rulebook gives Motunui - Island Paradise as an example of a location card.

Minor Changes

  • The rulebook is now an actual booklet rather than a single double-sided foldable page.
  • The flavorful description at the beginning now mentions locations as another type of glimmer.
  • There is now a Table of Contents.
  • The "About the Game" section also mentions locations as being glimmers now.
  • The list of card types now includes locations.
  • The description of how Songs work has been rewritten to clarify that singing isn't the only way to play these cards without paying ink, and that some card effects can also do this.
  • Location cards are new for the Into the Inklands set. They stay in play when played, can give you special abilities, and various card effects may interact with them.
  • The example cards for each card type have been changed. Previously, we had Cruella De Vil - Miserable as Usual, Dinglehopper, Dragon Fire, and One Jump Ahead. Now we have Minnie Mouse - Funky Spelunker, Lucky Dime, Voyage, and The Bare Necessities. Additionally, Motunui - Island Paradise is added as an example of a location card.
  • The list of rarities now includes Enchanted.
  • The list of inks and list of rarities are now in their own section of the rulebook, rather than lumping them in with "Parts of a Card".
  • When describing Classifications, the example of "Broom" has been removed and it is now written without an example.
  • When listing the parts of the card, ink type is now listed before Classification, instead of after it.
  • The example of a keyword has been changed from "Rush" to "Evasive".
  • The section on "Abilities and Effects" now lists locations as having abilities.
  • The parts of a card that are "Only on Characters" have now been re-phrased as "Only on Some Cards", despite Strength still only being on characters.
  • Willpower and Lore Value now mention that they are on locations. Willpower on a location is how much damage it takes to banish it. Lore Value on a location is how much lore you gain at the start of your turn.
  • The example card that shows off all the parts of a card has been changed from Mickey Mouse - Wayward Sorcerer to Stitch - Covert Agent.
  • The setup process now has you deciding who goes first at the start, before decks are shuffled and hands are drawn and altered.
  • Using a location ability has been added to the list of actions that you can take during your main phase.
  • Challenging can now be done with either an opponent's location or an exerted character, rather than only the latter.
  • The section on playing a card mentions location cards now, mentioning that they are like items in that they are placed above your inkwell and that you can use them right away without having to wait for ink to dry.
  • The example of a challenge has been replaced. Previously, it was Captain Hook - Captain of the Jolly Roger challenging Donald Duck - Boisterous Fowl. Now it's Patch - Intimidating Pup challenging Magic Broom - Dancing Duster.
  • The paragraph explaining costs of abilities has had its opening sentence re-written for clarity.
  • The example given for using an ability has been updated from Beast's Mirror to Heart of Te Fiti. Unlike the previous example of Beast's Mirror, a picture of Heart of Te Fiti is provided for the benefit of players unfamiliar with the card.
  • The rules for multiplayer games no longer mention Lorcana by name, instead simply saying "this".
  • The introduction to the deckbuilding rules also no longer mention Lorcana by name.
  • The full deckbuilding rules now refer to the game as "Disney Lorcana TCG" instead of as "Lorcana".
  • The example of cards with the same name has been updated. On the old version, it mentioned Elsa - Snow Queen and Elsa - Queen Regent. Now it instead mentions Kida - Atlantean and Kida - Royal Warrior.
  • The "turn order at a glance" section now says "use an item ability" instead of "activate an item".
  • "Use a location ability" has been added to the "turn order at a glance" section.
  • The "turn order at a glance" now also mentions that you can challenge locations.
  • The list of symbols at the bottom of the page for "turn order at a glance" now includes the move cost symbol.
  • The legal information and copyright has been updated.
