Rulings:Resist
Resist Rulings
Resist is an additive ability. If you have 2 copies of Cogsworth - Grandfather Clock in play, both copies of Cogsworth will have Resist +1 from the other Cogsworth while all other characters you control will have a total of Resist +2, 1 from each copy of Cogsworth.[1]
If Resist reduces the damage dealt to 0, that Character was not dealt damage. In such a situation, abilities like Beast - Relentless's SECOND WIND that triggers when an opposing character takes damage will not trigger as no damage was dealt.[2]
As of August 9, 2024, Resist is an ability that creates a replacement effect.[3] Instances of damage that are affected by Resist are instead replaced with the modified damage amount, which may be as low as 0 damage. If Resist and another damage replacement effect were to affect the same instance of damage, the player that played the card that triggered the replacement effects decides which one will happen.[4]
- If you have both Beast - Selfless Protector without Resist and Lythos - Rock Titan in play, and the opponent plays Ba‐Boom! and chooses to do 2 damage to Lythos, both the Resist effect on Lythos and Beast's SHIELD ANOTHER ability will trigger. The player of Ba-Boom! now chooses which replacement effect will resolve successfully: either 0 damage is dealt to Lythos (2 damage reduced by 2 due to Resist), or 2 damage counters are placed on Beast (the Resist is not applied in this instance). [5]
- If a player chooses a character with Resist to take damage as part of a cost, and the damage is reduced to 0, the cost is still considered to have been paid. For example, if the opponent has Lythos - Rock Titan in play and plays Teeth and Ambitions, and chooses their Lythos to take the first instance of damage ("Deal 2 damage to chosen character of yours"), the damage will be reduced by 2 to a total of 0. This effectively changes the effect of the card to read "Deal 0 damage to chosen character of yours to deal 2 damage to another chosen character.", meaning the "cost" of the action has still been paid.[6]
