You may choose to not reduce the strength of any characters when playing Painting the Roses Red. In this case, you would only draw a card and Painting the Roses Red would finish resolving.[1]
You may not choose the same character twice for Painting the Roses Red. If you choose more than one character, they must be different characters.[1]
